Orleans Parish School Board Adopts ‘Milo’ the Robot Designed to Aid Students with Autism in Honor of Autism Awareness Month
ORLEANS PARISH SCHOOL BOARD ADOPTS ‘MILO’ THE ROBOT DESIGNED TO AID STUDENTS WITH AUTISM IN HONOR OF AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH The robot will tour through Orleans Parish public schools following a district-wide teacher training.

NEW ORLEANS – (April 2, 2019) – During Autism Awareness month, the Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) will introduce the newly-adopted ‘Milo’ robot technology into classrooms to help support students with autism across New Orleans public schools.
The robot, named Milo, is designed to equip students with autism across the country with strategies to improve their social and emotional skills. On Thursday, March 28, a group of specialized staff working with students with autism were trained in the use of the new technology at OPSB’s Central Office in Algiers.
The robot will visit the following schools this month during the tour:
• Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School of Literature & Technology – Wednesday, April 3 & Thursday, April 4
• Foundation Preparatory Charter School – Friday, April 5
• Benjamin Franklin Elementary School – Wednesday, April 10
• Cypress Academy – Monday, April 15
Autism is characterized by a wide range of challenges related to social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. In 2018, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) determined that one in 59 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It affects all children, despite ethnic and socioeconomic background, and is best treated with early intervention strategies to help children with healthy development. Milo, under the direction of a licensed therapist, provides the predictability and consistency needed for these students to develop greater emotional regulation skills, emotional understanding, vocabulary and responses to environmental changes.

The OPSB currently oversees 79 public schools, including 75 charter schools, two direct-operated schools and a school with two educational programs for students in secure-care facilities. On July 1, all New Orleans public schools were unified under the oversight of the locally-elected Orleans Parish School Board for the first time since Hurricane Katrina.
