Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home and Cemeteries to Hold “Run/Walk Through History” Road Race

The Nation’s Largest Cemetery Race to Draw Several Hundred Participants to Historic Metairie Cemetery in its 21st Year

NEW ORLEANS –  Registration is now open for the Run/Walk Through History, hosted by Lake Lawn Metairie Cemetery in partnership with New Orleans Running Systems, Inc. (NORSI). On Sunday, Mar. 27, runners, power walkers and leisure walkers alike will participate in the nation’s largest cemetery race located on the grounds of historic Metairie Cemetery at 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. This year’s race will mark the event’s 21st anniversary and in previous years, has typically drawn more than 700 participants of all ages to compete in 5K and 1K races. The property was formerly the site of a premier horse-racing track, Metairie Race Course, until the cemetery was constructed in 1872. Race proceeds benefit local non-profit Save Our Cemeteries, dedicated to the preservation, promotion, and protection of New Orleans’ historic cemeteries through restoration, education and advocacy.

“We are excited to co-host this community tradition for our local families and race enthusiasts,” said Jerry Schoen, director of community relations and funeral director at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home. “For 21 years running, proceeds from this race have provided our friends at Save Our Cemeteries, an organization that shares our passion for the promotion and preservation of New Orleans’ historic cemeteries, with essential funding to continue their mission.”

Craig Henry, Save Our Cemeteries board president, added “We look forward to once again partnering with Lake Lawn Metairie, NORSI and all the wonderful sponsors and participants who support this race every year. Their enthusiasm and efforts are instrumental to the preservation and restoration of our beautiful and historic local cemeteries.”

“Year over year, this event celebrates health, fitness and community,” said Chuck George, race director at NORSI. “Race enthusiasts of all levels are welcome and encouraged to join us for a fun-filled event that benefits an important local cause.”

Following the races, participants can enjoy festivities next to the funeral home with an awards ceremony, music, food and beverages provided by local sponsors Kentwood Springs Water, Crescent Crown, Capitol City Produce, Elmer’s Chee Wees, Baker Maid and more. All race finishers will receive a custom commemorative race t-shirt and pin.
