Uber Freight Partners with Every Shelter to Transport Tarps to Areas Impacted by Hurricane Laura
Uber Freight delivers ultra-durable tarps to assist areas impacted by Hurricane Laura.
NEW ORLEANS – (Sept. 17, 2020) – Uber announced today that the company has partnered with Houston-based non-profit, Every Shelter, to transport tarps to areas impacted by Hurricane Laura.
One shipment of the ultra-durable tarps is equivalent to approximately 13,200 to 17,600 pounds of repurposed plastic to create roof tarps, which will assist anywhere from 600 to 1,200 families. Each tarp can last multiple years while residents are getting back on their feet.
“FEMA estimates that 70 to 80 percent of roofs in the Lake Charles area will need to be replaced,” said Every Shelter Co-Founder and CEO, Scott Key. “I had the opportunity to be on the ground in Lake Charles when many of the tarps were delivered. It was difficult to find a roof that wasn’t significantly damaged by Hurricane Laura. Uber Freight donating the transportation of these tarps is an important part of the recovery effort.”
As residents are working to repair roofs to protect their homes from any additional damage, the tarps offer a quick and simple solution. Taking only around 15 minutes to install, they can last many years while families recover and are able to permanently repair their roof.
“So far, Every Shelter has received 3,000 billboard tarps for these homes. Of that amount, Uber Freight’s in-kind donation has helped us move 2,400 of them, which is equivalent to approximately 105,600 pounds of repurposed plastic transported for this noble cause,” Key said.
